Fake Post

Countdown:  60 Days
Today’s Exploit:
I’m too busy making new playlists for Starla to write a real post.  I’m a terrible blogger.

I’m Worth Two

My favorite song today:
I need you like another broken heart
and a hole in my head,
I need you like a six foot grave
and a high speed train wreck,
I bet you find it hard to believe
but I miss you like a bad disease.
-Schuyler Fisk
Today’s Exploit:
I was up for ages the other night.  We got all our computers running and the cables routed to the proper places and the tool built and programmed.  Then all that was left was to wait for the rig.
I waited until 4:30 am.
We finally started picking up the pieces of the assembly.  I had my tool ready to hook up to the winch and was waiting for my cue.
I watched the driller and the DD talking, occasionally looking at me and pointing once or twice.
I ignored them.
Then Rick, the DD, came over to talk to me.
Rick:  I was asking Hector how many guys he had on his crew.
Me:  How many?
Rick:  He said 6, including himself.
Me:  Oh.
Rick:  Then he told me that I counted for one and you counted for two.
Guess I’m pretty important, even though they don’t let me work.

Dancing the Night Away

Yesterday I made cinnamon rolls.  When I took them to the rig floor the crew actually cheered.
Today’s Exploit:
I went dancing last weekend.  Swing dancing.  It was very exciting.  I haven’t been swing dancing in ages.
This dance was in Dallas, and it lasted from 8:00 - 11:59 pm.  Lots of people were there.  Some really amazing dancers were there, too.  It was fun to watch.
Being a newbie, I sat on the wrong side of the room to see them very well.  Most of the “in” crowd sat and danced on the other side of the room.
I also danced a lot.  And had lots of people ask if I’d been to this dance before.  They were amazed when I said no.  Most of this amazement stems from another girl that apparently looks like me.
Some people were amazed because I could follow, and were a bit too dense to realize that my first time at this dance didn’t necessarily mean my first time dancing.
At any rate, I think I made some new friends.  Certainly lots of new acquaintances.  I hope to be able to see them again.  And sit on the “cool people” side of the room so that I can see them better.

The Man Had Cartoon Feet

Butter takes a really long time to soften when you want to make cookies right now and the only butter of the unsalted variety you have is in the freezer. Even when it’s 80 degrees inside because you have the door open to hear the wind chimes.

Today’s Exploit:

The other night I fed my addiction for the first time in, oh, almost a year.

I got to leave the rig on Friday. I happened to look up the calendar for the Dallas Swing Dance Society. It said that there was an event in Fort Worth.

So I wasted all day at the mall and in the container store just so that I could still be in town.

I also drove in rush hour traffic for 2.7 hours because Timmy the GPS got lost and said there were no highways where, clearly, there were 7 or 8 of them.

But eventually I arrived at my new favorite dance locale. And the sun was going down and the breeze was blowing so it was only 75.3 degrees, instead of 91.4 like it was in my car. It was a nice reprieve after roasting most of the day.

Eventually I went inside and watched the 18 piece band assemble and warm up and, finally, start to play.

Then the dancing began!

It was very different from the swing dances I’ve been to in the past. This one had attendees that were probably alive when this type of dancing first became popular.

I watched and watched and smiled and sang along.

Then I got really courageous. You’ll never believe it.

You won’t.

I went up to a stranger and asked him to dance with me.

And he said yes!

Success!

We danced and it was lots of fun.

Then I went back to my table and shook with nerves through the next two songs.

Finally I calmed down and smiled and sang and tapped my feet some more.

Then I noticed that the older woman sitting at the table next to mine was up and dancing. So I decided to ask her partner to dance. Sadly he had a bum leg. But we talked for a while and watched the dancers.

Then the song ended and I went back to my seat. That was when someone came and asked me to dance. And I was really nervous and stumbled all over the place. It was tragic.

During the next few dances I saw THE MAN.

In a normal crowd I probably wouldn’t have noticed him. But dancing he was the star of the show. He knew all the pauses and accents. And his feet were so fast that they were a blur, and hypnotizing.

I eventually got up the guts to go ask him, but on my way I was accosted by someone else. The someone else was a very enthusiastic dancer. Unfortunately he couldn’t keep a beat and had a frame like a dead fish. But it was still fun. And challenging, like putting together a puzzle with no picture reference, mostly guessing.

It was a few songs later that I finally got a chance to ask THE MAN again.

And he even said yes.

Success!

We danced and it was AWSOME. Except I was so mesmerized by his feet that I had a hard time concentrating on dancing myself.

But we made it through the song and he even told me I was a good dancer. Even though I stumbled through half the steps because I haven’t done them in eleven months and 2 hours.

He even asked me to dance a couple times after that. It never got any easier to not stare at his feet.

I believe that this must be the end for today. I’ll regale you with more details at a later date. My mind is still overflowing with the fact that HE said I was a good dancer.

I Was Attacked By Irises

Last night I met Cody. Cody is a little fuzzy dog that decided it would be much more fun to listen to my instructions instead of his person’s.

Maybe I can adopt Cody while I’m in town, and give him back when I leave. Would that be an ok deal?

Today’s Exploit:

I went dancing. In Fort Worth. PS They had a live band. Check out Route 66.

But that’s a story for another day. Today’s feature is flowers at the Southside Preservation Hall.

While I was walking around trying to figure out where I was, and maybe looking for a door, I came across the irises. I almost missed the dance because I was so amazed by these things.

First I saw all the purple ones. All different color purples.

Then I saw the white ones with the funny skinny petals.

But then. Then I noticed the stars. These things were monsters. As big as my hand, obviously. The ones we had in our Saratoga back yard were about a third this size, I think. It’s been a while since I’ve seen those ones.

They were so big that they were falling over, the stalks couldn’t hold one flower. And most of them had 3 or four more buds ready to bloom tomorrow or Wednesday.

I Spent Today In A Cloud of Dust

I’m slightly obsessed with Grace Potter and the Nocturnals and Florence and the Machine at the moment. And, embarrassingly, Jesse McCartney.  And Hayley Sales.  And Mumford & Sons, and Laura Marling.

Living on a rig, with miserably slow internet, does not feed my music obsession.  I am starving out here.  I have to listen to the same 3 songs over and over because it takes those 3 songs ALL DAY to load.

Today’s Expoit:

I swept four days ago. This is today’s pile. And my foot.

I think there may have been this much in my shoe last night after my run.
Dirt roads + lots of traffic = gritty shoes.  Gross
The End.

Accordions and Hula-Hoops

I was going to post about Starla today, and my adventures with her. But the story wasn’t finished, and I have not motivation. So, instead, you get a random story from 6.7 months ago.

Today’s Exploit:

When I visited home, not the last time but the time before, it was summer. And Laramie had the weekly Friday Farmers’ Market.

I forced Cupcake to go with me, and we saw lots of dogs, and bought fruit that I had never tried before (and still haven’t. We forgot about it and it mouldered in the fridge), and we Hula-hooped. We used giant hoops, and made fools of ourselves. We had great fun and scared all the kiddies that wanted to play. It was the Wellness booth, and we played with all their games.

When we decided that we’d swiveled enough we started wandering some more.

That was when we discovered the busker. He was playing the accordion. Cupcake was immediately enamored. She’s still on her European kick. And the accordion reminded her of France.

We stood there and listened to the music for a very long time. Cupcake even requested a song, and he knew it. She would have stood there until he finished if I’d let her.

But finally I told her I had to make dinner, and she had to come with me. So she tipped him and told him she loved him, and we trundled along about our business.

Right now I am listening to some music that Cupcake gave to me, the soundtrack from Amélie. So I am remembering standing in the sun, surrounded by people listening to the accordion. And imagining sidewalk bistros and the smell of bread wafting from patisseries. And the Eiffel Tower.

This music makes me want to travel.

It’s Called “Young Love is Wonderful, but I’m Not Your Toy”

Trivia:

The highest point in Pennsylvania (Mt. Davis, 3,213 feet above sea level) is lower than the lowest point in Colorado (3,350 feet on the Arkansas River near Holly).

Today’s Exploit:

Rather than coming up with a good topic, which I had really planned on doing, I spent the day changing the layout of my blog. I hope you like it. I rather like my “Buttons”.

Also I read a lot of trivia.

And some new blogs.

And ate far too much cornbread.

Please lend me a wheelbarrow, I need it to get back to the trailer for more cornbread.

Also I compiled a new playlist:

Opera Cow

Lately I’ve seen advertisements on TV for the new 2 dollar bills. Apparently they’re collectibles. You can order either 2 or 3 of them for $10, but they have a $50 value. Does anyone else find this inconsistent? They’re $2 bills.

Today’s Exploit:

Today I walked into the trailer to discover an animated cow singing opera, its ears blowing in the wind. The last person to watch the TV had changed the channel to Classical Baby, which evidently puts animations to classical music. I find it quite hilarious that one of the guys I’m boarding with would choose that channel. Not one has ever given any hint of wanting to watch anything other than football or horror shows.

When I left a grasshopper was playing the violin.

After laughing at the cow for a few minutes, I realized that I recognized the song. I don’t listen to opera very often, so that revelation was rather shocking. So I decided I had to find out what it was.

It was not a difficult project. I typed “Classical Baby, cow” into youtube’s search engine. This is what I got:

I’m a little obsessed with it at the moment; trying to figure out who sang the version that I know. I really like the song, and think the cartoon is rather hilarious. I hope you enjoy it.

Tomorrow I Will

My first order of business is this: Which of my parents posted as Bill and Tahna, and which posted as Anonymous? And something is wrong with the one that wants Goldfish tacos. Goldfish are meant to be eaten head first. Or occasionally tail first. But not in taco shells.

Today’s Exploit:

I have been bored out of my mind tonight while procrastinating. I need to take some tests for my next school. But I don’t wanna. So I read 100 pages of my book. And I found some new music. And I organized some files. And I watched a movie.

I will be productive tomorrow. I will!

In the mean time I have found a new singer that I love. Missy Higgins. Very relaxing music. Mmmmm…

Tomorrow I will take my tests. Tomorrow I will prepare for class. Tomorrow…

Tomorrow I will fortify myself to deal with Bob the Company man.

Tomorrow I will tell you about him.

Tonight I can’t’ think of him anymore. He frustrates me. He makes me want to smash plates. And he invades my office space.

But that’s for tomorrow.

PS Dad: Tonight you should make Beef Stew.

Sleep Deprivation

I had a very rough morning. So I thought I’d chronicle it. But the chronicling spiraled out of control and ended up being a very detailed description of my entire weekend. I was even able to focus my eyes long enough to edit a little, but not too much.

Today’s Exploit:

My trip back to the mountainous regions of Denver and Laramie was very eventful. So many activities paired with the night schedule I’m used to equated to very little sleep.

First was the excitement of going home. That meant that I went to bed late in the day and only slept 3 ½ hours before anticipation of leaving the rig took over. That morning I decided not to remove my contacts because putting them back in my eyes in a few short hours would be excruciatingly painful. This idea resulted in really dry eyes on the three hour drive to the Dallas airport (that means I had a really hard time focusing. My eyes would randomly get really blurry and I’d have to blink 23 times to be able to see again). The other option, taking them out, would have hurt really badly and I still wouldn’t have been able to see for the tears streaming down my face.

Of course as soon as I got to the airport, where I could take them out and use my glasses, they stopped bothering me.

When I arrived in Denver I spent 18 minutes trying to convince my sister that it didn’t matter what terminal she went to. I tried with all my might to get her to tell me where she was and sit tight. She didn’t believe me, so we ended up wandering all over the place trying to find each other.

On the drive to our lodgings, in addition to Cupcake’s random yelling directed at her GPS, we came across a drug bust. We had stopped at Good Times for some food and 1.68 blocks later we discovered 19 cop cars, lights flashing, surrounding one lowly, beat up, Honda.

We finally stopped talking at 12:43 am and went to bed. It was lovely to sleep, until I woke at 5:30 am. I ate some frozen custard and talked to some very excitable dogs and one disinterested cat.

When Cupcake finally got up at 7:30 we went to the waffle place around the corner. Then we walked around looking at houses for the next three hours. We then decided to go see the plasticized bodies on display at the Museum of Natural History, which meant more walking. After ogling at muscles and hearts and spleens and embryos we decided to leave for our concert and beat rush hour traffic. We arrived two hours before the gates opened, so we walked some more. And took “senior pictures”.

We then stood/danced for 4 hours.

The concert ended at 12:04 am, or somewhere around that time. We stopped for food again and went back to our beds, probably at 12:47.

I woke at 5:30 again.

This day also consisted entirely of walking and/or standing:

Walked to the store
Walked around a farmers’ market
Walked around the mall
Stood in the kitchen while Mary cooked some amazing Greek lasagna
Walked to the Theatre
Stood for the concert
Walked back to get the car

I then got to sit for a while, the problem with this was that I had to stay awake long enough to drive home. My sister said she’d drive half way, but she was not about to be woken when we got to that point. That left me with the option to continue driving, or sleep in a dark parking lot.

I finally got to sleep at 2:43 am. I then woke at 8:06. Luckily this time, after staring at the wall for 27 minutes, I was able to go back to sleep. I woke at 10:21. We were supposed to be at my parents’ house in nine minutes. I still had to wake myself, wake my sister, get her moving, and we both had to get dressed. Then we had to make the eight minute drive. Amazingly we were only six minutes late.

After eating toast and potatoes and ½ a slice of bacon, we took coffee or tea and sat on the porch. It was so nice out, under 83 degrees for sure! We sat there for a while, and then decided to go for a drive to the mountains. On the way there we talked about dandy antelope and spleens affected by leukemia; we also were hit by a hail storm. This storm came on very suddenly with huge chunks of ice beating on the car. We had to yell at the top of our lungs if we wanted to communicate verbally.

The massive downpour of ice chunks did abate before we arrived at a good spot to take pictures of me and the snow. I got out long enough to take four pictures, and throw two snowballs. Then they made me get back in the car because I was shivering.

On the drive back my mom slept in the back seat. I sat in the front with my dad. It was very difficult for me to keep my eyes open. I had help though: every time I would fade out my dad would turn to look at me with something to say. I could feel the thoughts burning into me: hey, I have something to say! So I’d open my eyes half way and he’d tell me about how Delta Nu might be hiring soon, or that at nights the Cowboy cutouts on the new firehouse light up.

After eating fried burritos we went to the viaduct over the train tracks. My mom wanted to take photos of Cupcake and me for a frame she has. Mom, I hope you like all my pictures with puffy eyes and rings around them. We stayed up late looking at the pictures.

It rained that night. Hard. I was on my feet trying to get to the window to save the photos all over the floor before I registered that it was actually raining. I think I’d slept for 2.46 hours. I was able to sleep fitfully for a few more hours, until my dad woke me at 5:30 to go for a run. The one where the antelope blew raspberries at us.

I made it to the airport and through security in time to sit for seven minutes before boarding started. I was also able to sleep on the plane with my head under the head rest. The head rests were the ones that can fold up on the side, but also give you a crank in your neck because they make you lean forward so far. I also occasionally started awake when the person behind me kicked the seat.

I escaped the tangle of highways in Dallas and arrived at the rig with just enough time to put on some coveralls and run to my box. I was able to stay busy for most of the night, talking to the driller, the roughnecks, and doing prep work for another run at drilling the well. This all went smoothly until 4:49, when my eyes would start to cross if I focused on anything longer than three seconds and my arms stopped responding and my ear decided it really liked my shoulder. My only problem was that I was supposed to be conscious for another hour and 11 minutes.

I spent the rest of my shift staring blankly at the computer occasionally realizing that seven minutes had lapsed without my awareness or telling my hand it should reach out and click the mouse for that computer.

When the day hand arrived I walked to the trailer like a zombie on autopilot. I made it into my room and may have taken off my smurf-suit and brushed my teeth before falling into bed.

All About Antelope

This weekend I got to go home. It was the first time since my birthday! I went with Cupcake to see the John Butler Trio at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. It was brilliant, and we made some crazy new friends. Then we spontaneously got tickets to La Roux. That was lots of fun, but instead of making friends we got pushed around by adolescent girls.

It was a good workout, though. In addition to climbing the stairs at Red Rocks 4.7 times, we hiked up the street to the Ogden Theatre twice. And we stood/danced the entire time for both concerts.

Today’s Exploit:

After the concerts we drove to Laramie, and finally some cooler weather. I got to go with my parents on a drive to Lake Marie. I threw snowballs and shivered. Then we got ice cream

On the way up my mom saw a field with dandelions.

Mom: Look at the dandelions!

Dad: There are some dandy antelope, too.

Me: Haha.

Mom: The dandelions must be stalking the dandy antelope.

Me: I think in this case the dandy antelope are probably stalking the dandelions.

Mom and Dad: Hahahahahahaha!

The next morning, since we didn’t have time to go skiing before I flew back to the seventh circle of hell (also known as summertime in Texas), I went for a run while my dad rode his bike.

Thirteen steps into the “real” run, after we got off the pavement, I heard a funny noise.

The Mystery: Pththfffttt

Me: What was that?

Dad: A bird?

Me: It sounded like your elephant impression.

Dad: It did!

The Mystery: Pththffftttphft

Dad: There’s an antelope over there, maybe that’s what it was.

Me: Maybe. (I wasn’t wearing my corrective lenses, so it looked like more dirt and rocks. Maybe a bush)

The run continued and my traitorous lungs tried to make me turn around at least every 2.45 minutes. My ankles held up nicely, though. The trail had lots of loose rocks.

We were almost back when we heard it again

The Mystery: Pththfffttt

Dad: It was an antelope!

Me: Hunh.

Dad: I’ve never heard an antelope before!

Me: Me either…pant, gasp.

My lungs: Stop right now! Or I’ll never work again!

Update: My lungs are still rebelling. They’re pretending that it’s my shoulder muscles that hurt. But I’m on to them.

Bribery

The past couple days have been very hectic for me.  I ran five miles Thursday, and the roads are hilly.  Friday I carried the SlimPulse six times.  (SlimPulse is the tool I run.  It is copper tubing about 30 ft long, 1.5 inches in diameter filled with electronics. In other words it's not light.  And sometimes I have to add extensions, which are solid steel.)  To carry the tool, I pick it up and rest it on my shoulder.  I have no padding on my shoulder, so it hurts really bad.  I couldn't sleep on my right side after that.  Also, I could hardly move the next day.

Just when I was starting to recover, my shoulder didn't hurt to touch, and I was ready to run, we did it again.  This time I only carried the tool four times, though.

When I started I had to have a physical.  They made sure I could lift 75 pounds to shoulder height.  Then they told me that, because I'm female, I am only allowed to lift 30 pounds.  The SlimPulse is definitely more then 60 pounds.  So every time I do my job, I am breaking the rules.  Go figure.

Today's Exploit

The other night I made Banana Bread.  But I didn't have a bread pan, so I used a muffin tin.  Of course I had to share.  (These guys get used to getting food real fast, ie, one time.)

Last night I was on the rig floor, when one of the rough necks, Billy, started teasing me about not bringing something for them again.  Normally I ignore this, but later the driller turned on some cajun music.  Another rough neck, Paul, started dancing.

I asked Billy if he was going to dance, too.  He said he would if I brought muffins.  Lucky for me I had some left over.  So I handed them out and the boys started dancing.  Imagine a cross between Pistol Pete dancing to Cotton Eye Joe and an Irish jig.  It was hilarious.

Later Ed came up, so I gave him some muffins.  I wasn't going to make him dance since he didn't get any the night before.  But the driller decided he had to.  Oh, my sides hurt.

I know bribery is not generally smiled upon, but this is too much to resist.  They've told me that they'd "really get down" if I bring something tonight.  I'm not sure who is bribing whom here, but I know we all come out happy.
